NESPA Winner: Localizing Contest, 2023
The Gator, Brimmer and May School, Chestnut Hill, MA
In April, the School held a Voices Assembly highlighting the immigration experiences of three students and teachers at school. The speakers of this Voices Assembly were PK-5 Teaching Assistant Namrata Schmottlach, Emma Guevara ‘23, and Francisca Guevara.
A Voices Assembly is an event that occurs twice a year where students and teachers of a marginalized group share their experiences with the school’s community. Community members have the chance to offer their appreciation to the Voices Assembly speakers.
The assembly was planned by the Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Jessica Christian. According to Christian, this was one of the best Voices Assemblies that the School has ever had.
“It was just super emotionally raw in there, which I think connects the community and I’m hoping it helps people, including me, realize the privilege of being born in the country you are living in,” Christian said.
