NESPA is happy to announce our 2nd annual Broadcast Journalism in-person contest, which will be held on Saturday, November 16th, at Emerson College in Boston!
What is this contest all about? The premise is simple: teams will have five hours to write, produce, and edit a broadcast package in the News/Feature Story category by completing a Video Package or audio-only podcast style segment. Participants will not be allowed to schedule interviews beforehand, and all content must be recorded during the contest. Yes, that means exploring Boston on foot with microphones and cameras to find the right story and complete it before the deadline.
If you have an established broadcast program with a large group of students, This contest is for you!
If you have a brand new broadcast program with a small group of students, This contest is for you!
If you have a journalism program but your students have never made a broadcast package, This contest is for you!
We recommend team sizes of no more than five but will leave team size to the teacher’s discretion. Schools may enter up to 3 teams per category, with a maximum of 5 teams total per school entered. The entry fee is $10 per team. NESPA has scholarships for schools/teams that may need assistance covering the per-team cost. Please contact us to utilize these scholarships if needed.
This contest is open to any high school students in New England, regardless of membership status with NESPA. The only requirement is that students bring any video, audio, and editing* equipment and laptops needed to complete this contest.
Each submission will be eligible for Gold, Silver, or Bronze status based on a predetermined rubric. Industry professionals will evaluate the submissions and provide students feedback to help improve future projects.
